The Nuremberg Rally Site
In January of 1934 Hitler gave Speer his first major work, It was to build a permanent reviewing stand for the Nuremberg Rally. Albert Speer's inspiration for this design came from the Pergamon Altar. His design was:
400m long
24 metres high
Capacity to seat 340,000
To create an dramatic effect he surrounded the stadium with 130 anti aircraft lights which cast massive beams of light
up to 8000m in to the sky. He was also tasked with building new and permanent buildings at the Nuremberg Party Rally site. He formulated the ideas and designed to build a stadium and a Congress Hall.
The stadium design was to be made in a giant horse shoe shape. (Deutschland Stadium). This stadium was going to be made so it was 3 times the size of the Great Pyramid and it was going to have seating for 400,000 people. However his Congress Hall would look just as impressive with it's giant glass dome and seating for 50,000 people. He was also creating a new military field. The "March Field" would have seating for about 160,000 people and it would also have a 2km parade avenue within the complex.
To fund these projects there need to be the creation of a special group called the Nuremberg Reich Party Rally Ground Association was created to supervise and attempt to try and find the 800 million marks that would be needed to fund the projects. In the end none of the work was finished and by the time that the war put an end to the construction only the basic foundations had been laid and very little progress had been made.
Albert Speer also designed the German Pavilion for the World Fair, as it was opposite to the Soviet Union he altered his design to make the German Pavillion bigger and more extravagant. Dominating the structure was teh German swastika and an eagle that had been placed on the tower. Speer's building was seen as a monument to and a symbol of German pride and achievement under the Nazi's.
