Germania: HItler’s plan for the new Berlin 1937-42.
Hitler had a dream of rebuilding to a new and grand stage so that it would be worthy to be the capital of his new thousand year Reich. As part of this dream Albert Speer was named as Generalbauinspektor (GBI or Inspector General of Buildings for Construction). As part of fulfilling this dream Speer created huge models of grand scale of what the new Berlin would look like, some of these models include:
Moving the railway stations so that when people arrived at the new South Station they would arrive and see a long and very wide avenue that would be longer, grander and more impressive then the Champs Elysees in Paris.
There were to be two buildings that would dominate the avenue they would be the Arch of Triumph which was a massive stone structure that would be higher than the Eiffel Tower and have the names of the 1.8 million Germans who died in World War 1 engraved on it. And at the far north end of the avenue there was to be the Grand Hall that would have the world's largest dome which would be over 200m in diameter.
Trees would also line the avenues and the avenues would be lit by 400 special street lights that were going to be designed by Speer himself.
